Each year thousands of ATVs are stolen just for a joy ride. And if you think locking your machine in the garage makes it safe, nothing could be further from the truth. You need to protect your ATV with an ATV alarm.
Most machines are actually stolen right out of the garage but there are some great ways to protect your machine. Don’t let your ATV be part of someone’s midnight shopping spree.
Master and Kryptonite are both well known lock manufacturers that have been doing so for a long time now. They offer both U-locks and chain style locks.
In fact there is a new type of chain lock made from hex shaped chain. Master calls it’s lock the Street Links chain while Kryptonite calls it the New Yorker’ chain. Both guarantee that the hex chain can’t be cut by box cutter because you can’t get a bit into the links. It also can’t be cut by a saw or file, or smashed with a hammer or chisel. There is just no place to get any leverage.
Top that with the fact that the chain itself is extremely heavy duty with 20,000 pounds of cut force and 10,000 pounds of pull force and you’re covered.
Now they know your machines paint is important and you don’t want to scratch it up with a lock so both manufacturers have coated the chain with a black nylon fabric.
Master and Kryptonite use different lock mechanisms to hold the chain. Kryptonite has a 7 pin tube lock mechanism while Master uses the traditional Master Lock Padlock. Both still offer the traditional U-shape lock which is perfect for locking up on a trail because they are small enough to easily fit in your backpack.
Both also have cable locks. It’s recommended that you use the larger 20mm that is more difficult to cut. The smaller size won’t deter a real criminal as it’s very easy to cut.
Kryptonite also has the strong hold units which can be bolted directly to a trick bed, into a trailer, or even into a cement floor. This is a great way to ensure your machine is safe and secure. When you are not using it you can lay it flat and out of the way.
And a lock and chain by itself still isn’t enough. You need to add am alarm. It’s an easy process as long as you have a battery. The Gorilla or the Armed Guard Security alarms are both good choices. It has current, tilt, and shock sensors. The alarm itself is tied to a pager which you carry with you and if the alarm is tripped it send a page to you so you know the alarm has been triggered.
Using an alarm is the last measure in safe guarding your ATV. Thieves will stop at nothing short of packing it out on their back so it’s important that you lock it up and arm it all the time with your ATV alarm. No exceptions!
